TiVo Attack On Four Verizon Patents Among Reexamination Requests Filed Week Of 5/30/11

Here is the latest installment of Reexamination Requests from Scott Daniels, of Reexamination Alert and Practice Center Contributor….

On Thursday, TiVo requested reexamination of three Verizon cable box patents, and on Friday, of a fourth Verizon patent (see ex parteRequest Nos. (9) through (12)).  These requests are only the latest development in an on-going patent war between the two companies that includes fronts at the ITC and in two District Courts.

Reexamination was requested for SynQor’s U.S. Patent No. 7,272,021 for power converters (see inter partes Request No. (1)).  In January, Judge Ward enjoined Artesyn/Astec and a series of other companies from infringing four SynQor patents, among them the ‘021 patent.  It is not yet clear from the PTO records who filed the request.

And Abbott Diabetes Care requested reexamination of three DexComanalyte-sensor devices in the long-term patent dispute between the companies (see ex parte Request Nos. (4), (5) & (6)).

The following inter partes requests were filed:

(1)         95/001,637 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 7,272,021 entitled POWER CONVERTER WITH ISOLATED AND REGULATED STAGES and owned by SynQor.  Filed May 31, 2011, perhaps by Artesyn.   The ‘021 patent is currently the subject of a litigation styled SynQor v. Artesyn et al. (Case No. 07-cv-497-TJW (E.D. Tex.)).

(2)         95/001,638 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 7,090,904 entitled ENHANCED SLIDER ZIPPER MULTIWALL BAG AND ASSOCIATED METHODS and owned by General Electric Capital.  Filed June 2, 2011, by Graphic Packaging Int’l.  The ‘904 patent is currently the subject of a litigation styled Exopack v. Graphic Packaging Int’l. (Case No.  7:11–cv-337-HFF (D.S.C.)).

(3)         95/001,639 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 6,979,482 entitled MULTIWALL BAG WITH ZIPPER AND FIN and owned by General Electric Capital.  Filed June 2, 2011, by Graphic Packaging Int’l.  The ‘482 patent is currently the subject of a litigation styled Exopack v. Graphic Packaging Int’l. (Case No.  7:11–cv-337-HFF (D.S.C.)).

(4)         95/001,640 (electronically filed) – U.S. Patent No. 7,544,403 entitled BAG HAVING AN IMPROVED HEAT SEAL CLOSURE AND ASSOCIATED METHODS and owned by General Electric Capital.  Filed June 2, 2011, by Graphic Packaging Int’l.  The ‘403 patent is currently the subject of a litigation styledExopack v. Graphic Packaging Int’l. (Case No.  7:11–cv-337-HFF (D.S.C.)).

(5)         95/000,633 (paper filed) – U.S. Patent No. 7,629,705 entitled METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR OPERATING ELECTRICAL MACHINES and owned by Filed May 24, 2011, by Volkswagen Group of America.  The ‘705 patent is currently the subject of a litigation styled Stragent, LLC et al v. Audi AG et al, Case No. 10-cv-00227-LED (E.D. Tex.).
